Ronnie Johnson takes two at Cabin Fever

January 29, 2011 - With perfect weather after a month of figid snow and rain, Saturday couldn't have been a better day to get out and enjoy some good old fashion dirt racing. With the main event being a 40 lap Super Late Model event. Who was going to knock on the Cabin door first, with 32 Super Late Models signed in to take qualifying times. The two top spots were taken by two cajun veterans in Ronnie Johnson and Ray Cook. The top 16 were locked in by qualifying times and two B-Mains would finish out the 24 car field. A couple of early cautions came before the field could get under way. Aaron Wilson would end his try early on lap 1 then David Gentry would exit on Lap 3. Then the racers settled down for some long needed action on the 3/8 mile clay oval. Racing up front was clearly between polesitters Ray Cook and Ronnie Johnson with Johnson taking the early lead. Ray was trying to run the middle to high groove while Johnson had it buried to the bottom. Johnson began working through lap traffic like a knife going through hot butter. Cook began to fade after some late cautions making running on the top very difficult. Johnson went on on to win leading every lap and winning by a 5 second lead followed by Cook, Riley Hickman and the teammates of Lamar Scoggins and Rick Hixson.

Earlier in the day Johnson had decided that a single Cabin wasn't big enough so he decided to build upon a two story Cabin. Johnson starting from dead last in the heat race in the Crate Late Models field of 26 cars passing his way all the way up to fifth place at the checkered flag, but an inspection by track officials both the 1st and 3rd place cars were DQ'D for illegal tires. This would move Johnson up to the third outsite row position. When the green flag flew in the 20 lap feature Curtis Cline would jump to the early lead followed by Jeff Smith. By lap 3 Johnson had already taken over the 2nd place and was setting his eyes on the lead. A lap 4 caution for Caleb Ashby would bunch the field up with Johnson now on the rear bumper of Cline. On the next lap Johnson overtook Cline and never looked back as Johnson held off the hardcharging Jeff Smith. This gave Johnson a perfect 2 for 2 and a Double Story Cabin.

In A Hobby a good early race between Dewayne Wilson and the every popular "Booger" Brooks took place. Brooks would go on to hold off Wilson, Jordan Roadabaugh, Clint Carter and Tim Ford. In FWD a newcomer to winner circle was the x20 of Joe Cross followed by Tom Gilbert In B-Hobby another Brooks was in the winning ways as Micheal Brooks took the win over Kennedy and Schrader.

When the day was over nearly 100 cars had made it outside to join their fellow racers and fans alike to enjoy a Great day of racing. The crew of Boyd's Speedway showed why they are one of the best, getting started at 12:00 noon and was completly finished by 4 pm.

Great Job! Way to go Ronnie Johnson, but most of all Thanks to All that made this race possible. (utvolsracer)
